Sleeve Gasterectomy

What is Sleeve Gasterectomy surgery?

Sleeve gastrectomy, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve surgery, is a surgical weight loss procedure that involves reducing the size of the stomach to limit food intake. During the procedure, a surgeon removes a large portion of the stomach, leaving a banana-shaped "sleeve" or tube-shaped stomach that is smaller and can hold less food. The remaining stomach is closed with staples or sutures.

The procedure is usually performed laparoscopically, meaning that small incisions are made in the abdomen and a camera and surgical instruments are inserted through these incisions to perform the surgery. Sleeve gastrectomy is considered a restrictive weight loss surgery, meaning that it reduces the amount of food that can be eaten, but it does not affect the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine.

Sleeve gastrectomy is often performed on individuals with obesity who have not been successful with traditional weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. It is also commonly used as a first step in a two-part weight loss surgery, with a subsequent surgery such as gastric bypass or duodenal switch being performed at a later time. The procedure can lead to significant weight loss and improvements in obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.

Who is suitable for Sleeve Gasterectomy surgery?

Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is typically recommended for individuals who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 or more with at least one obesity-related health condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea. However, the suitability of an individual for this surgery is determined on a case-by-case basis and involves a thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider.

In addition to meeting the BMI criteria, candidates for sleeve gastrectomy should also have tried to lose weight through other methods such as diet and exercise but have not been successful. They should also have a commitment to making lifestyle changes to support their weight loss goals, including following a healthy diet and exercise program.

It is important to note that sleeve gastrectomy surgery is not appropriate for everyone, and potential candidates must undergo a comprehensive evaluation to determine if they are suitable for the procedure. This evaluation will typically involve a medical history review, physical exam, and various diagnostic tests. Additionally, individuals who have certain medical conditions or who are taking certain medications may not be eligible for this type of surgery.
